misp-logoMath Infusion into Science Project improves student achievement in mathematics by contextualizing mathematics in “real-world problems” which helps to engage and motivate students.

Week long lesson plans designed for 8th grade science classes infuse the mathematical concept of unit change into life/physical/earth & space science experiments. Students collect data, either experimentally or from scientific sources, and then plot their data to assess rates of change.  The activities were created by Scott McMullen, Dr. Beverly Clendening, and Dr. David Burghardt and refined by the MiSP team.

The plots are used to understand natural phenomenon and solve problems via graphing and using data. There are three levels to allow for different mathematical ability/sophistication which build as follows:

  • Level 1 – plot and interpret data on a graph
  • Level 2 – Level 1 plus estimate the best-fit line to solve real world problems
  • Level 3 – Levels 1 & 2 plus determine and use the equation for the line
